Vuoksi Cycling Route

Pyöräily Imatralla

The Vuoksi Loop is an enjoyable cycling route, suitable even for families with young children. It introduces riders to the impressive landscapes and birdlife of the Vuoksi River.

The starting point of the route, Imatrankoski, is a Finnish national landscape and the country’s oldest tourist attraction, admired since the 18th century. In the 1920s, the rapids were dammed for electricity production, and since then, water has only been released during scheduled rapids shows. Even when dry, the riverbed that runs through the center of Imatra is an impressive sight.

The Vuoksi River is both a central element of Imatra’s cityscape and the outflow of the Vuoksi water system, eventually leading to Lake Ladoga and the Baltic Sea. Imatrankoski was formed with immense force around 5,700 years ago, creating a series of rapids—several of which are located within the Imatra area. The route follows the banks of the Vuoksi along pedestrian and cycling paths in the heart of Imatra. On the eastern side of the river, you’ll find several museums, while the western side features many pleasant parks that are perfect for a break. Along the way, information boards provide insights into the history and nature of the Vuoksi.

Surface type: gravel and asphalt.
