The approximately 160-kilometer-long route offers amazing experiences: the sights of the cities of Lappeenranta and Imatra, as well as three charming parish villages – Taipalsaari, Ruokolahti, and Joutseno. If you extend your journey with the Savitaipale loop, you can enjoy the idyllic rural landscapes, explore the crystal-clear waters of Lake Kuolimo right in the center of Savitaipale, and visit the historic Kärnäkoski fortress.
Along the Saimaa Archipelago Route, you will also find several Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark sites, offering unique nature and cultural experiences – they are definitely worth a visit.

The journey between Sarviniemi and Kyläniemi is made by the bicycle ferry m/s Rasti, while the route between Ruokolahti and Utula passes through the stunning Äitsaari scenic road. This beautiful route also includes a boat ride, adding an extra touch of adventure to the journey.
Along the Äitsaari scenic road, you'll find Huuhanranta, one of the longest sandy beaches on Lake Saimaa. This 1.5-kilometer-long beach is known for its shallow, sandy bottom, making it ideal for wading and relaxing. No wonder Huuhanranta is also called the "Riviera of Saimaa" – it’s the perfect stop to unwind and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

Alternatively, you can cycle via the mainland and visit Syyspohja, where you’ll find the impressive stone barriers of the Salpa Line. In Kyläniemi, on the eastern shore of Rastinvirta, lies Rastinniemi – one of the most stunning excursion destinations on Lake Saimaa.
Rastinniemi is about 4 kilometers from the Kyläniemi harbor, with 3 kilometers of the journey taking place on a gravel road – but the effort is well worth it. Two campfire shelters cater to independent hikers, and the shoreline stretching on both sides of the peninsula provides the perfect setting to enjoy the tranquility of nature.

It’s a good idea to set aside several days for the route, as there is so much to see and experience. A stop in Lappeenranta is highly recommended – especially in summer, when the city’s charming harbor attracts visitors with its cozy cafés and restaurant boats. And don’t forget to try the famous "vety", a local specialty!
Be sure to visit Lappeenranta’s historic fortress, which serves as both a fascinating attraction and an idyllic picnic spot. From the top of the hill, you’ll enjoy stunning views over Lake Saimaa, and along the fortress’s cobbled streets, you’ll find museums, cafés, small boutiques, and Finland’s oldest Orthodox church. In the summer, the atmosphere is further enhanced by a popular open-air theater within the fortress

The Saimaa Archipelago Route passes through Imatra, where you simply cannot miss Finland’s oldest national landscape – Imatrankoski Rapids. In summer, the rapids come to life in spectacular public shows, where the rushing waters are beautifully accompanied by music.
The area is also home to Finland’s first nature reserve, Kruununpuisto, established in 1842, as well as the iconic castle hotel, Scandic Imatran Valtionhotelli, which offers a historic atmosphere and high-quality accommodation.
