Four Islands Cycling Route

Pyöräilyreitit Saimaalla, Lappeenrannan ja Imatran seudulla

The Four Islands Route takes you through the beautiful lake scenery of the Greater Saimaa waterway in Imatra and Ruokolahti. The route includes a boat transfer, which must be booked in advance.

Surface type: asphalt and gravel road.

Note: It is recommended to ride the route clockwise, even though the route description is written in the opposite direction.

In addition to island scenery, the route offers views of the city of Imatra and the historic church hill of Ruokolahti, the original parish of the area. The impressive Vuoksi River is a central element in Imatra’s cityscape and serves as the outflow river from the Vuoksi water system to Lake Ladoga.

The Vuoksi was formed with tremendous force around 5,700 years ago, leaving behind a chain of rapids along its course to Lake Ladoga. If the Imatrankoski Rapids (a Saimaa Geopark site) are not already included in your travel plans, this route is a great opportunity to visit them — and to enjoy views of the Vuoksi River, starting from its western bank.
