The Saimaa Archipelago Route

A stunning route through the islands of Lake Saimaa

The Saimaa Archipelago Route in the South Saimaa region offers a spectacular scenic route for cyclists and the opportunity to explore unique cultural sites. Along the 160 km route along the shores of Lake Saimaa and the pine forests of the Salpausselkä, you will see the sights of Lappeenranta and Imatra, as well as three charming church villages in Taipalsaari, Ruokolahti and Joutseno. Combine the route with the Savitaipalee tour and you’ll see idyllic countryside and Kärnäkoski Fortress. There are also several Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark sites along the Saimaa Island Route that are well worth a visit!

Tips for cyclists

Combining the Savitaipale tour with the Saimaa Archipelago Route, you can see idyllic countryside, Partakoski and Kärnäkoski Fortress.

It’s worth setting aside several days for the route, as there’s plenty to see. For those interested in geology, the Saimaa Geopark offers many interesting sites. Alvar Aalto’s architecture can be seen in Imatra, and Lappeenranta’s living fortress area is fascinating for its history. Excursions and beaches invite you to relax in nature and swim, while restaurants and cafés offer local delicacies. Along the route you can stay in personalised hotels, bed and breakfasts or camping on the shores of Lake Saimaa. The journey between Sarviniemi and Kyläniemi is made on the cycle ferry Rasti, and on the ferry trip you can see the Kutvele Canal built by General Alexander Suvorov.

The section between Ruokolahti and Utula can be pedalled via the Äitsaari scenic road and crossed by boat across the water. You can also cycle across the mainland and visit the stone paths of the Salpalinja in Syyspohja.

It’s good to take a break on the Saimaa archipelago route and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.
